Sheriff's Office identifies deceased, deputies in March 4 shooting incident
Posted: March 7, 2009 12:29 p.m.
As a result of a Clackamas County Inter-agency Task Force (CCITF) investigation and execution of a fall 2008 search warrant, two separate warrants were issued in Clackamas County for the arrests of Marjorie Frances Crawford, age 80, and Hubert Henkel, age 68.
Crawford and Henkel were known to occupy a residence located at 13262 S. Macksburg Road, in Canby (Mulino), Oregon. The newly issued Clackamas County arrest warrants were first received at the Sheriff's Office on March 2, and promptly entered into the law-enforcement data system on March 3, 2009. Each of these felony arrest warrants were issued with the following charges:
- Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance
- Delivery of a Controlled Substance
- Possession of a Controlled Substance
On March 4 at 10:30 p.m., two uniformed Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Patrol deputies responded to the S. Macksburg Road residence to arrest Crawford and Henkel.
The two deputies identified themselves, and were reportedly confronted at the front door by Hubert Henkel -- who was armed with a firearm, non-compliant and pointing the firearm in a threatening fashion directly at each of the two deputies.
As a result of this armed threat to the deputies, Hubert Henkel was fatally shot and died at the scene.
Marjorie Crawford was also located inside the residence. Detectives interviewed her and subsequently took her into custody on the existing warrant. Crawford was lodged in Clackamas County Jail on felony charges of Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance; Delivery of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Crawford has since been arraigned on these charges in the Clackamas County Circuit Court, on Thursday, March 5, and was on that occasion released by the court on her own recognizance. Crawford is set to appear in court on this continuing matter on Monday, April 6 at 9 a.m.
The two involved Clackamas County deputies were not injured during this armed encounter. They are identified as:
- Deputy Brian Lister: Deputy Lister has prior law-enforcement experience with the Molalla Police Department, dating back to December 1998; the Seaside Police Department between May 2003 and January 2007. Brian Lister was hired as a Clackamas County Deputy Sheriff in January 2007.
- Deputy Jesse Ashby: Deputy Ashby has prior law-enforcement experience with the West Linn Police Department, where he served as a reserve Officer between October 2001 and July 2003. He moved into a full-time position as a West Linn Police Officer in July 2003, where he remained until January 2007. Jesse Ashby was hired as a Clackamas County Deputy Sheriff in January 2007.
Per Clackamas County Sheriff's Office policy, Deputies Lister and Ashby have been on administrative leave since the time of the incident.
An investigation is being conducted by the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team with interagency participation. When completed, the investigation will be submitted to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for consideration of an independent grand-jury review.
The Sheriff's Office has successfully completed family notification by locating and notifying a sister of the deceased who resides in Canada.

_____
"As I say in the video's introduction: Our mission is to be open and transparent in these situations. We need to be considerate of and compassionate toward the Deputies involved in these situations, their families, and also the family of the individual who died as a result of a deputy's actions. It's our hope that this video will provide some valuable insights. It's an honor to serve you."
