At 5:04 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of S. Schneider Road and S. Kropf Road, south of Canby.
The Oregon State Police arrived first on the scene at 5:10 p.m., followed directly by Sheriff's Office deputies.
Deputies investigated the accident scene and spoke with an eyewitness to the crash. It was determined that a 2001 Ford Econoline van, carrying only its driver, was traveling southbound on S. Kropf Road approaching S. Schneider Road at the posted speed limit. At the same time, a 1985 Ford station wagon, carrying its driver and two passengers, was travelling westbound on S. Schneider Road.
Witnesses reported that the Ford station wagon failed to slow or stop at the posted stop sign, entered the intersection at S. Kropf Road, and was struck by the Ford van -- causing both vehicles to land off the roadway down a short embankment.
Molalla Fire Department and Monitor Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and extricated the occupants of the station wagon by cutting the roof off the vehicle.
Life Flight transported one passenger from the Ford station wagon to Emanuel Hospital. American Medical Response transported the drivers of both vehicles to a Salem hospital by ambulance. The third remaining passenger of the station wagon was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.
According to the investigating deputy, there were no indications that alcohol, speed or reckless driving played any role in the crash.
It was determined that both vehicles had been detoured around a previous crash in that area, which had resulted in a fatality. Although the injuries of this accident were serious, none of the four people involved in the crash died as a result.
By 6:56 p.m. both vehicles had been removed from the scene, the stop sign (which had been damaged during the crash) was replaced, and traffic flow was returned to normal.
