BORING -- Members of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded on Friday, Aug. 7 to a fatal head-on traffic collision that resulted in one fatality and four patients sent to area hospitals.

On Friday, Aug. 7, 2009 at 9:40 p.m. the fatal traffic crash occurred at the intersection of SE Orient Road and SE Waybill Road, in Boring.

Rescue personnel from Boring Fire, Gresham Fire and American Medical Response arrived on the scene to attend to the number of injured. In addition, one person injured in this crash was airlifted from the scene by LifeFlight.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office also summoned the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction And Forensic Team (CRAFT) to the scene to investigate this fatal crash.

It was anticipated this section of roadway would be closed for a considerable period of time during the crash investigation.

With all the suffering and emotional distress generated at the scene, volunteers representing the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) have been summoned to the hospitals and crash scene to aid with the extensive emotional challenges generated from this event.

Investigating deputies report that Jeffrey Wayne Hunt, Jr., 21, of Gresham, and his right front seat passenger, identified as Daniel Herrington, 21, of Gresham, were traveling northbound on Orient in Hunt's 2002 Volkswagen Passat, approaching SE Waybill at a high rate of speed.

Investigators determined that Hunt failed to negotiate the curve at Waybill, which sent Hunt's vehicle into the oncoming lane sideways -- striking the front of an oncoming 2008 Ford Escape. The force of this impact drove the Ford Escape backwards before overturning and trapping the Ford's driver in the vehicle. The Ford's driver died at the scene.

The deceased is identified as Marco Antonio Guerrero, 48, of Gresham.

Jeffrey Hunt and his passenger Daniel Herrington remained in the Volkswagen Passat vehicle after the impact with Guerrero. The Volkswagen came to rest in the middle of the roadway on SE Orient Drive.

Moments later, Melissa Kay Davis, 39, of Boring, came onto the scene. Davis was driving her 2004 Hyundai Accent northbound on Orient Drive, and was not aware of the crash at the intersection of Orient and Waybill. Melissa Davis suddenly came upon Hunt's crashed Volkswagen Passat in the middle of the road on SE Orient Drive; Davis applied the brakes and slammed into the already crashed Passat in the middle of the roadway.

Marco Guerrero's 14-year-old son Austin Guerrero was riding as the Ford's right front passenger seat at the time of the crash. Austin Guerrero was transported by ambulance from the scene to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, and was later released in fair condition.

Daniel Herrington (passenger in the Volkswagen Passat) was airlifted from the scene to Emanuel Hospital and was awaiting surgery for broken legs. He is reportedly in stable condition.

Jeffrey Hunt, Jr. (driver of the Volkswagen Passat) was not seriously injured in the crash, and is listed in fair condition at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital.

Melissa Davis (driver of the Hyundai Accent) was not seriously injured, and was later released from Mount Hood Medical Center.

All vehicles are totaled. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident; however, speed does appear to be a contributing factor. All persons involved were wearing 3-point seat belts, and all airbags deployed.

CRAFT technicians will continue to investigate this fatal traffic crash.
