At 10:11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, Renee A. Peterson, 70 -- who resides in a mobile home on SE Vineyard Road in Oak Grove -- was riding a motorized cart inside the Oak Grove Fred Meyer at 14700 SE McLoughlin Boulevard. Peterson was next to an ATM, with $100 cash neatly stacked on a convenience table next to her as she filled out a deposit slip.

Peterson uses a wheeled walker for moving about; while shopping, she was using the store-provided motorized cart.

At this time, a man carrying a white-colored bag of dog food (possibly the Beneful brand) approached the ATM on Peterson's left side and asked her, "Do you think this dog food would be good for my adult pit bull?"

She briefly replied -- and turned around to find that her $100 cash had vanished from the table.

Renee Peterson had just been duped -- the unfortunate victim of a second-degree theft. She sat on the motorized scooter, cried, and summoned security.

Peterson told a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy that the man who asked her the distracting question was last seen running through the store.

The investigating deputy and Fred Meyer Loss Prevention personnel checked the store surveillance images -- and determined there were two males involved in the theft.

One male reportedly conducted the distraction by asking Peterson a question, while the other male seized the opportunity to discreetly grab the money from the table while Peterson's attention was elsewhere.
