OPEN / CLOSE DATES:  Opens February 18, 2009 / Closes March 18, 2009

DATES OF WORK:  May 26, 2009 through September 7, 2009
               
DIVISION: Patrol/Marine Patrol Unit               
Vacancies: 6
Wage: approximately $12.21 / hr   
Days of work: Varies, four consecutive days work (based on assigned workweek)
Days off: Three consecutive days off (based on assigned workweek)
Hours of work: Four consecutive ten-hour days; overtime on prior approval
Hours of work: Varies; patrol usually ends at least one hour past sunset to as late as 0200 hours on high-use holidays, dependent on traffic and department needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Members of the Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol Unit are responsible for Law Enforcement on the waters of Clackamas County.  Team members respond day or night in all weather conditions, operating open non-motorized and motorized vessels on patrol and rescue situations.  Water conditions range from flat water to highly technical heavy-current Class IV whitewater. Patrol and rescue duties are routinely physically demanding and may involve an element of personal risk. 

Marine Service Officers are non-sworn team members who assist deputies with marine patrol duties, including preparation of boat inspections, citations and other paperwork; detection and investigation of boating and criminal violations; public contacts and meetings; boat operation and maintenance, and assistance with rescue operations.  Applicants should be comfortable in, on and around water, and physically capable of paddling, rowing, swimming, hiking and other outdoor-related activities.  Mechanical and or electrical aptitude is a plus but not a prerequisite.  Applicants must be prepared for a high level of self-initiated activity in a friendly and consent-based context.

Successful applicants will receive training from marine deputies in basic powerboat operations, whitewater and drift boat operations, water rescue and recovery techniques and other duties as assigned. Performance expectations may be crafted around college internship or learning program goals.  Performance will be evaluated over the course of the season and concluded at the end of the season.

QUALIFICATIONS:

At the time of selection all applicants must

  1. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
  2. Possess a valid Oregon Driver’s License;
  3. Possess an Oregon Boater’s Education Card.
  4. Pass an oral interview and swim assessment, to be conducted on the same day in early spring 2008 (to be announced).


Once selected,

  1. Must pass a thorough background investigation conducted by CCSO
  2. Must be available to respond to callouts.
  3. Must maintain a positive attitude towards the department and assignment.
  4. Must maintain a strong team attitude.
  5. Must demonstrate competence in basic powerboat operations;

B.  SELECTION PROCESS:  

  1. Screening of Letters of Interest and materials will be reviewed to confirm applicants meet the minimum requirements stated above.
  2. You will be notified of an oral board interview and swim assessment date and location through your contact information (email being preferable).
  3. Selected applicant will submit a timely background packet and undergo a through background investigation.
  4. The Sheriff, in consultation with interview panel staff and background investigators, will make a conditional offer of employment prior to the May 26, 2009 start date.
  5. Dates of employment may be adjusted to accommodate school/exam schedules.
