On Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 11:11 a.m., rescue personnel from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas Fire District #1 and American Medical Response responded to a single-vehicle crash at 10555 SE Mather Rd. in Clackamas.

An off-duty Portland Police officer was in the area at the time of this crash, and alerted Clackamas County 911 dispatchers.

The officer reported that both the injured female driver and a younger male passenger were unconscious. The female driver was discovered face-down on the ground -- and was believed to have been dynamically ejected upon impact.

The off-duty officer also reported smoke coming from the engine compartment and was concerned about a potential fire igniting. The officer had access to a fire extinguisher if necessary. It was not required.

Emergency personnel arrived on-scene and quickly confirmed that both the male and female occupants of this crashed vehicle were seriously injured. LifeFlight was alerted and placed on a standby mode. American Medical Response transported both patients by ground to the Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland.

A Sheriff's Office deputy investigating this crash reports that the female driver involved in this crash remained listed in critical condition as of 1 p.m. today (Saturday, Jan. 8).

The younger male passenger transported to OHSU is listed in stable condition.

Deputies believe excessive speed is a contributing factor that caused this vehicle to depart the roadway and collide head-on with a large tree. The crashed vehicle, towed from the scene, is described as a 2005 Lexus. (Photos are linked above, provided courtesy of Clackamas Fire District #1.)

Deputies believe that prior to impacting the tree, this vehicle may have been traveling at a high rate of speed -- clipping several mailboxes along the way as it careened westbound along SE Mather Road. Deputies suspect that some sort of medical condition may have influenced and triggered this erratic driving.

Deputies continue to investigate, and are also attempting to confirm the identities of the two victims involved.
