On Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 5:19 p.m., the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol responded to a fatal boating mishap in the High Rocks recreational area on the Clackamas River, approximately 50 yards west of the I-205 Bridge.

The deceased is identified as Finn Terry, 11. He lived with his family on NE 28th in Portland.

Finn Terry was floating the Clackamas River from Barton Park to Clackamette Park with additional members of Boy Scout Group #107 when his canoe capsized -- forcing Finn and a male adult companion into the frigid water.

Finn Terry and the male adult were wearing personal flotation devices. Unfortunately, Finn Terry was pulled under the surface of this swift-moving, 43-degree water. Hydraulics or debris in this portion of the river may have been contributing factors in this regrettable death.

The male adult was pulled safely from the river by other boaters in the area who tossed "throw bags" to the capsized pair.

No other injuries were reported.

Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol and Dive Rescue personnel -- as well as personnel from American Medical Response, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, Lake Oswego Fire, Clackamas Fire District #1, and Gladstone Fire -- all participated in the effort to recover the victim's body.

At approximately 6 p.m. June 7, the drowning victim was recovered approximately 100 yards west of the I-205 Bridge.

The Clackamas County Deputy Medical Examiner responded to the scene and aided in the death investigation and recovery of the deceased. A Portland Fire & Rescue Chaplain was summoned to notify Finn Terry's family.
