On Monday, June 30 at 11:30 p.m., Steven Thomas Ruhl, 63, was assaulted by two young males while riding his bicycle on SE Fuller Road, in Happy Valley (at the rear of Pet Smart).

The two believed responsible for this assault were arrested by Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Patrol Deputies, who located the suspects fleeing the area on foot.

A witness to the attack reports that he was exiting his place of employment and observed an older subject (Ruhl) on the ground while two younger males — one described as taller and the other as shorter — kicked him.

Deputies arrived in the vicinity and were able to locate the two suspects. One suspect, Dylan Wiley, initiated a brief foot chase that resulted in his arrest.

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and tended to the injured Steven Ruhl. It was apparent that Ruhl had suffered, at minimum, a shoulder injury, and he was transported to Providence Hospital in Portland.

The arresting deputy did not know the extent of the victim’s injuries at the time of lodging. The investigating deputy contacted an attending physician later that evening, and learned that Steven Ruhl had been transferred to Emanuel Hospital to address more serious additional injuries -- including several broken ribs, a fractured pelvis, a broken foot, a broken clavicle, and possible inner-cranial bleeding.

No motive has been identified in this violent attack, which resulted in these extensive injuries.

Steven Ruhl, who resides in the area, reports that he was harassed several days prior by at least one of the two suspects now in custody. And when Ruhl observed this subject again Monday evening, prior to the attack, he immediately fled on his bicycle as fast as possible -- only to be run down by the two and knocked off from his bicycle onto the pavement. Ruhl was then kicked and beaten while he was helpless on the ground.

These two suspects in custody are identified as:

An arraignment is scheduled for this afternoon (July 1, 2008) at 3 p.m. in the Clackamas County Circuit Court in Oregon City.
