 AQUATIC EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Under direction, to instruct individuals in aquatic exercise classes at North Clackamas Aquatic Park; to develop curriculum and instruct participants in effective exercise techniques; to enforce park safety rules and regulations; and to do other work as required.     

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District provides aquatic, park, recreation, education and social services to senior citizens, youth, students and other County residents within the park district boundaries. 
The Aquatic Exercise Instructor is responsible for the safe and effective instruction of participants in park exercise program activities, including course design and instruction, as well as enforcement of park rules and regulations.      
This classification differs from the Aquatic and Recreation Supervisor which has supervisory responsibility over program activities and staff.  The Aquatic Exercise Instructor differs from the Aquatic Equipment Specialist which is responsible to perform and coordinate the maintenance and repair of park facilities and equipment.  This classification also differs from the Lifeguard/Instructor which monitors pool activities and enforces pool rules and regulations. 

TYPICAL TASKS

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

1. Prepares and presents safe and effective aquatic courses; designs curriculum to include warm-up, cardio-training, stretching, and toning for all fitness levels; demonstrates use of various pieces of aquatic exercise equipment. 

2. Observes participants and suggests improved breathing techniques and alternatives for skill improvement. 

3. Prepares pool area and equipment; ensures aquatic exercise equipment stored in an orderly fashion; maintains equipment in good working order for use by participants. 

4. Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations for class participants; ensures a safe and effective learning environment.    

5. Provides orientation, assistance and encouragement to participants with a positive, customer oriented attitude. 

6. Keeps abreast of and shares new teaching methods and techniques by seeking out additional training opportunities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Working Knowledge of:  Effective curriculum development and instruction techniques; principles of aquatic exercise; safety principles and first aid; effective communication skills; CPR and first aid.  

Skill to:  Demonstrate swimming ability; train others in swimming techniques; perform water rescues; bend to demonstrate exercises, and provide assistance to participants; perform repetitive high energy movements of the arms, legs and torso for extended periods of time; apply basic first aid techniques; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with County employees and the public.   
 
WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties are performed primarily within an aquatic park environment, with prolonged exposure to pool and related chemicals.   

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Current American Red Cross CPR/PR and AED.   Must complete blood-borne pathogen training within six months of hire.  Must be 16 years of age at time of hire. 

A. E. A. and/or A.C.E. instructor certifications preferred but not required.

MINIMUM RECRUITING STANDARDS

Any satisfactory combination of experience and training that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and skills.
