At about 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2009, a La Salle Catholic College Preparatory employee found what appeared to be an unexploded device near the landscape shed on the school campus.

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded -- and identified the device as an improvised explosive device.

The device is believed to possibly be a modified illegal firework. Deputies were unable to determine if that was true, due to the wrapping of tape on the device.  (See photos, linked above.)

Per protocol, the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit responded to the school, took control of the device, and transported it to a location for disposal.

Unlawful Manufacture of Destructive Device is a Class "C" felony in the State of Oregon.

The school did not go into lockdown, but school administrators were aware of the situation. Click here to read Principal Tom Dudley's message to La Salle parents
