Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Case # 10-12415

On Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 10 a.m., Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue, Marine Rescue and Dive Team personnel responded to a report of a missing fisherman in the Willamette River at 11859 SW Riverwood Road in Portland.

Deputies learned a fisherman -- identified as DALE EDWIN GARLAND, 57, of SE Portland -- had been reported missing to Milwaukie Police. Dale Garland had reportedly departed his SE Portland residence prior to 5 a.m. the morning of April 24, parked his vehicle and boat trailer at the Milwaukie Jefferson Street boat ramp, and was motoring in the Willamette River with his dog.

Garland's last known location was later traced to a private residential boat dock located on the opposite side of the Willamette River at 11859 SW Riverwood Road in Portland. Deputies reviewed security surveillance images and determined Garland arrived at this private boat dock around 5 a.m. in his boat -- complete with fishing poles, food and his beloved dog.

Friends of Dale Garland reported locating Garland's boat moored at this dock for several hours, with the boat occupied only by the dog. Dale Garland was missing and could not be located in the immediate area.

Garland is a diabetic -- and it is not known if his diabetic condition triggered an episode that may have placed him in jeopardy.

Dale Garland's family arrived with Sheriff's Office Search & Rescue personnel at the command post, and are being comforted by Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) volunteers.

At this writing, Sheriff's Office Dive Team members are in the water, conducting an arching style search from where Garland's boat was located on SW Riverwood Road.

In addition, members of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas County Sheriff's Cadets, Milwaukie Police, Lake Oswego Police and the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office have been conducting a door-to-door ground search for Dale Garland.

The Milwaukie Police Department has obtained a missing-person report for Dale Garland from his spouse. The Milwaukie Police case number is 10-1612.

Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol personnel are also searching along the banks of the Willamette River in hopes of locating Garland. Garland was equipped with the required personal flotation device in his boat; however, surveillance images reportedly show Garland not wearing a personal flotation while on the water prior to his disappearance.

Sheriff's Office personnel will remain in the area conducting this continued search at least until darkness arrives later this evening (April 24).

Dale Edwin Garland, 57, is described as a white male, 5'08', 210 pounds, with dark and gray-colored hair and a full beard.

The Sheriff's Office asks that any member of the public with info on Dale Garland's whereabouts please contact the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office or Milwaukie Police Department.

All appropriate family notifications have been conducted with the Garland family, who are presently assisting deputies with this ongoing search effort.
